What is dropped object prevention?

Dropped object prevention is the systematic process of preventing tools, equipment, components and other objects from falling from height.

A dropped object can be anything from a hand tool or piece of equipment to a light fitting, valve component or structural item.

The risk isn't limited to large objects. A relatively small tool can generate significant impact energy when dropped from height, which is why securing tools and equipment is an important part of working-at-height safety.

How is dropped object prevention achieved?

A good dropped-object prevention programme typically involves:

1. Identify
Find objects that could potentially fall.

2. Assess
Determine the likelihood and potential consequences of an object falling.

3. Prevent
Use suitable fixings, barriers, guards and secure mounting arrangements.

4. Tether
Use appropriate tool lanyards and tethering systems for tools being used at height.

5. Provide secondary retention
Where appropriate, use retention wires, nets or other independent securing systems to prevent equipment from falling if its primary fixing fails.

6. Inspect
Regularly check tools, tethering equipment, fixings and retention systems for damage or deterioration.

7. Train
Ensure workers understand dropped-object risks and know how to secure and use equipment correctly.
