Lifespan of a TAH Hammer
Safety is paramount when working at height, which is why our Tools at Height (TAH) hammers have a recommended maximum service life of 36 months for use at height.
Over time, regular use, general wear and tear, and exposure to demanding working environments can affect the integrity of a tool and its safety features. To minimise the risk of injury or equipment failure, we recommend that after 36 months, TAH hammers are retired from all work-at-height applications and, provided they remain in a safe and serviceable condition, are used exclusively as standard hand tools at ground level.
All hammers should be regularly inspected for signs of damage, deterioration or excessive wear and immediately withdrawn from service if any safety concerns are identified, regardless of age.
This proactive approach helps maintain workplace safety, reduce the risk of falling objects and protect those working both at height and below.
TAH Hammer – Pre-Use Safety Inspection Checklist
Before each use, carry out the following visual and physical safety checks:
Hammer Head: Check for cracks, chips, deformation, excessive wear or looseness.
Handle Integrity: Inspect for cracks, splits, bending, corrosion or other damage.
Head Security: Ensure the hammer head is securely attached with no movement.
Tether Attachment: Check that the attachment point is secure, undamaged and free from excessive wear.
Lanyard & Connections: Inspect the tool lanyard, clips and connectors for damage and secure attachment.
General Condition: Check for corrosion, deterioration or modifications that could compromise safety.
Service Life: Confirm the hammer has not exceeded its 36-month TAH service period.
Important Safety Notice: If any defects or signs of deterioration are identified, immediately remove the hammer from service. Never use a damaged hammer at height. Once the 36-month TAH service period has expired, the hammer must no longer be used for work-at-height applications, regardless of its apparent condition.
Remember: A hammer's suitability for use at height depends on both its physical condition and its designated service life. Regular inspections and responsible tool management help protect everyone on site.
